Poem : Masquerade

She and I we danced

behind our masks

to the tune society played;

The stately saraband

and quiet quadrille danced we,

masks we wore

and whirled away,

like painted marionettes

not living things,

and though our hearts cried

and wanted to be free

to live

to love

and to be,

our fixed masks held us to the falsity

the false tune society played,

the glittering masquerade.
